Shall Philadelphia or Seattle win the 2012 USCL Championship?!

The end of the 2012 USCL season is here; tomorrow night the Philadelphia Inventors and the Seattle Sluggers will fight for all the glory tomorrow, December 1 at 4 PM! With that in mind, I give you Rabin's final set of predictions for 2012!

GM Erenburg- GM Akobian 1/2-1/2 These guys drew at the Philadelphia Open back in April in a topsy-turvy affair. Erenburg had a slight advantage, blundered a piece in time pressure, and was miraculously able to draw. Akobian has been a fire this year, but as FM Mike Klein mentioned in his interview with GM Erenburg, four out of his five games this year was with the white pieces.

IM Orlov- SM Fisher 1-0 Fisher is known to perennially pull off upsets in the league and the truth of the matter is I wouldn't be all that surprised if he did here too, but with his recent wins against GMs Kraai and Holt, I think Orlov shall remain a favorite!

FM Gorman- Sinanan 1-0 FM Gorman has been a straight up beast this season, enough said!

Feng- IM Costigan 1/2-1/2 In a battle between youth and age, I think Costigan will equalize in the opening and not push for much more!

and a 2-2 Tied Match will lead to a tiebreaker that Seattle will win!

The Results-to-be of the 2012 USCL Semifinals!

Unfortunately, luck wasn't on my side last Wednesday, as I got 0/2 match predictions and only 3/8 or 37.5% of game predictions correct. Hopefully I can turn things around for the semifinals!

Wednesday night, I will be seeing Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler at the Barclays Center. Here's a video of a rendition of "Things Have Changed" that they performed a few months ago in Rome!

A Repeat of the 2011 Eastern Division Quarterfinals: The Manhattan Applesauce give Draw Odds to the Philadelphia Inventors

GM Romanenko- GM Erenburg 1/2-1/2 Erenburg won their week 7 encounter but that was with the white pieces; Romanenko is a rock with white!

IM Bartell- IM Vovsha 1/2-1/2 Vovsha is 2-0 against Bartell in league history, but he was white both times. Bartell is pretty solid as white too!

Shvartsman- FM Gorman 1/2-1/2 two solid players, why not draw?!

IM Costigan- King 1/2-1/2

and a match of four hard fought draws will send Philadelphia to the championship, Drawn Match 2-2

The Seattle Sluggers Yield Draw Odds to the Arizona Scorpions due to Inferior Tiebreaks ( Both Teams had 6.5-4.5 regular season records)

GM Akobian- IM Molner 1-0 a repeat result of week 3!

IM Altounian- IM Orlov 1/2-1/2- Altounian is a rock!

Sinanan- IM Mohandesi 1/2-1/2 solid guys!

Chakraborty-Lessler 1-0

and we shall see another Drawn Match 2-2

and Philadelphia and Arizona will both benefit from draw odds to face off in the 2012 USCL Championship!

Rabin's Prognostics for the 2012 USCL Western Division's Quaterfinals!

I did a pretty lame job predicting the Eastern Quarterfinals. I have to give Manhattan some credit for defeating my beloved Knights in a topsy-turvy match. Manager Shaun Smith was talking a lot of smack about the match and I requested I write an apology for predicting New York would win, if they lost. While I refuse to apologize, I thought I'd at least share our conversation!

I also got a mere 1/8 or 12.75% of game predictions correct but will take the consolation that I least predicted the correct outcome of the Philadelphia- Baltimore match.

Let's hope things are better for tonight! It's nice to have some competition now with Ron Young being back with his famous jumbles!

For my acclaimed Youtube video, I give you Phil Lesh and Friends' encore from last night's show, a rendition of "Not Fade Away." Expect a review of that show to a blog near you soon!

The Two-Time USCL Champions, The Dallas Destiny vs the Veteran Seattle Sluggers Who Never Quite Made it to the End

GM Sadorra- GM Akobian 1/2-1/2 Akobian will equalize in a theoretical opening and a draw will be the ultimate result!

IM Orlov- GM Holt 0-1 Orlov is certainly capable of drawing or beating Holt, especially as he shocked the crowds a few weeks ago, defeating GM Kraai. However, Holt is pretty good at creating complications to win with black. I also think Kraai didn't play his best in that game; out of the opening, it seemed as if he lost the two bishops for no real reason.

Safin- Sinanan 1-0 Anything can happen.. Safin has an incredible 4/4 record this season, while Sinanan has an excellent 5/7 record. With a slightly better record, a higher rating and the white pieces I'll give Safin an edge.

Lessler- Guenther 1-0

and Dallas will end Seattle's Season, Dallas Wins 2.5-1.5

The Experienced Arizona Scorpions Take on the USCL Post-Season Newbies, The St. Louis Archbishops

IM Molner- GM Diamant 1/2-1/2 They drew in week 9, why not draw again?!

IM Kannappan- IM Altounian 1/2-1/2 I think Kannappan is a slight favorite to win, but Altounian very rarely loses USCL games!

IM Mohandesi- IM Bregadze 1/2-1/2 Similar note the above game! I thought Bregadze was a favorite in their week 9 match up, and that was with the white pieces. They drew then, so another one seems likely!

Hendrickson- Chakraborty 1-0 Time for Revenge!

and Hendrickson will lead the newbies to victory! St. Louis Wins 2.5-1.5

Rabin Predicts the Results of the 2012 USCL Season's Eastern Division Quaterfinals

I will give a detailed analysis of my stats for the regular season, but that'll have to wait. My music readers will have lots to read this week as I have two concerts coming up this week! Tuesday night I'm going to Phil Lesh and Friends at the Roseland Ballroom and Wednesday I'm seeing the Who play the Quadrophenia album at the Barclays Center.

For my youtube video, here's a rendition of "St. Stephen" the band did in Monclair last week:

Without further ado, here's the expected results of tomorrow's night quarterfinal matches!

The Manhattan Applesauce Shall Attempt to Seek Revenge for its 2011 Semifinal Loss to the New York Knights

GM Romanenko- GM Gelashvili 1/2-1/2 Gelashvili got upset by Romanenko earlier this season. However, I don't think Gelashvili will crumble this time!

SM Herman- IM Vovsha 0-1 A toss-up in a wild game! With his back-to-back victories against IM Enkhbat and GM Hess, Vovsha seems pretty scary though!

Shvartsman- FM Bodek 0-1 Instincts here!

Katz- King 1-0 While objectively I think King is a stronger player than Katz, I think preparation will do Katz justice here and he will pull off a slight upset.

and my beloved knights shall defeat my second favorite team, New York Wins 2.5-1.5

The Philadelphia Inventors Shall Attempt to Make Use of Its 1st Place Finish Against The Baltimore Kingfishers

Last year Philadelphia also got the first place seat, but got knocked out in the quarterfinals by Manhattan Anyway... Shall it help them out this year?

GM Erenburg- IM Enkhbat 1-0 Enkhbat is a solid player and Erenburg has had a lot of draws this season... I was tempted to predict a draw, but I think Erenburg will come trough with a win!

GM Kaufman- IM Bartell 1/2-1/2 It's gonna be a relatively peaceful game.

FM Gorman- NM Wang 1-0 Wang shocked the crowds in week 8 as he upset GM Gulko with the black pieces.. However, Gorman has been a beast all season long..... I think Wang will go for complications due to draw odds and end up taking too many risks.

FM Zimmer- IM Costigan 1-0 Instincts!

and Philadelphia will meet New York in the Semfinals, Philadelphia Wins 2.5-1.5

Rabin's Predictions for the End of the USCL's Eastern Divsion's 2012 Season!!

I finished predicting the Western Division's 2012 season with a  bang, getting 3/4 matches and 11/16 match predictions correct. There were two last minute lineup changes that I did not account for ( Byambaa playing for SF instead of Ebrahimi and Mu playing for Carolina instead of Simpson). My stats are actually on the conservative side as I truthfully would have probably predicted Byambaa to beat Salisbury and Altounian to beat Mu. To the contrary, both games were draws.

Tomorrow night will be a very exciting end to the Eastern Division's as seven out of eight are still in playoff contention. See for a summary of playoff scenarios. Let's see what the results shall be!!

As three of the seven surviving teams will be eliminated, we shall definitiely see some stiff competition tomorrow night!

The Potentially Spoiling New England Nor'easters vs the Likely-to-be 2012 USCL Eastern Division Champions, the Philadelphia Inventors

GM Ivanov- GM Erenburg 1/2-1/2

FM Bartell- IM Vigorito 1-0 In 2010, they drew when Vigorito was white. In 2008, Bartell won with the white pieces.. I think he'll win again!

Theil- Gorman 1/2-1/2 While Gorman has been on fire lately, Theil hasn't played in the USCL since 2010's Week 10. While part of me wants to say Gorman will win, I think Theil will keep things solid with the white pieces.

Daly- Goldberg 0-1

and Philadelphia will be secured the first place spot in the East! Drawn Match 2-2

The Connecticut Dreadnoughts Needs to Defeat the Manhattan Applesauce to Have a Good Chance to Make the Playoffs!

GM Hess- IM Vovsha 1-0

IM Schneider- GM Kekelidze 0-1

IM Sarkar- IM Milman 1/2-1/2

Smith- Tanenbaum 1-0

and both teams will likely make the playoffs; Connecticut Wins 2.5-1.5

Two Teams Near the Middle of the Pack Duke it Out for Playoff Spots: The New Jersey Knockouts vs the New York Knights

GM Stripunsky- GM Gelashvili 1/2-1/2

SM Herman- GM Gulko 0-1

FM Shen- FM Bodek 0-1

Katz- Burke 1-0

and NY will end NJ's 2012 USCL Season! NY Wins 2.5-1.5

The Baltimore Kingfishers and the Boston Blitz Shall Fight to the Bitter End for A Potential Seat in the Playoffs

GM Margelashvili- Shmelov 1-0

FM Gulamali- GM Kaufman 0-1

Defibaugh- Matirosov 0-1

Krasik- Zimmer 1-0

and a Drawn 2-2 Match will make Baltimore's playoff hopes tiny and Boston's absolutely none!

Rabin Predicts the Results of The End of the Western Division's 2012 USCL Regular Season

I did a very poor job for last Friday's rare USCL action, getting 0/2 match and 2/8 game predictions correct. Let's see how I do tomorrow night for the end of the Western Division's regular season tomorrow night!

It is now once upon a time in the West!

Two Teams That Secured Playoff Spots Duke it Out: The 1st Place Dallas Destiny vs the 2nd Place Saint Louis Arch Bishops

The Dallas Destiny doesn't have all that much to play for as they secured clear first place; however the Saint Louis Arch Bishops has to win or at least draw to maintain its second place position.

IM Holt- GM Diamant 1-0

IM Kannappan- IM Wang 1-0

Gater- IM Bregadze 0-1

Hendrickson- Guenther 1-0

and Saint Louis will Likely Secure Second Place (depending how Seattle does), Saint Louis Wins 3-1

Two of the Teams that are Eliminated from Playoff Contention Bring Sub-2300 Lineups: The San Francisco Mechanics vs the Miami Sharks

IM Naroditsky- GM Becerra 1/2-1/2

Recio- FM Liou 0-1

FM Lee- Rosenthal 1-0

Salisbury- Ebrahimi 1-0 I don't know either of these players but I looked at their MSA pages and while Ebrahimi has been consistent in the 1800s, Salisbury is on a sharp rise, having made expert recently.

and a weak San Francisco Team shall defeat a weak Miami team, San Francisco wins 2.5-1.5

The Arizona Scorpions Who May with a Little Luck Rise to 3rd Place vs the Potentially Spoiling Carolina Cobras

IM Molner- IM Schroer- 1-0 a draw is the second most likely result!

FM Simpson- IM Altounian 0-1 Altounian will handle a lot of Simpson's complications and simplify to get the full point!

IM Ginsburg- Jones 1-0

Timmel- Martinez 1/2-1/2

and for a change, I won't take any margin of error! Arizona Shall win 3.5-.5!

The Los Angeles Vibe Shall Attempt to Maintain its Lifetime Record against the Seattle Sluggers (Current Score 2-1)

I give LA a lot of credit for utilizing a strong 2400+ lineup, even though they are already eliminated from playoff contention. To be honest, it's a little disappointing that some of the other teams sort of threw in the towel, brining subpar lineups.

IM Amanov- FM Mikhailuk 1-0

FM Milat- IM Kiewra 1-0 Milat won their 2010 encounter with the black pieces. Kiewra is definitely stronger now with a higher rating and IM title, but my instincts tell me Milat will win again!

FM Kavutskiy- FM Collyer 1/2-1/2

Sinanan- FM Yanayt 1-0

and we shall see Seattle Win 2.5-1.5

USCL on a Friday Night!: Rabin's Predictions for 11/2/12

On Wednesday night, I correctly predicted that the Boston Blitz would defeat the New England Nor'Easters. To the contrary, there was definitely luck involved as I only got 1/4 game predictions right:)

We are getting to the end of the road of  the 2012 USCL Season!

The Match that May Determine who will the 2012 USCL Eastern Division Champions: The Philadelphia Inventors vs the New York Knights

GM Erenburg- GM Kacheishvili 1/2-1/2

GM Gelashvili- SM Fisher 1-0

FM Gorman- SM Herman 0-1

Checa- IM Costigan 0-1

and New York Will Surpass Philly in the USCL Standings- NY Wins 2.5-1.5

The First Date Between the New Jersey Knockouts and the Connecticut Dreadnoughts

GM Stripunsky- GM Hess 1/2-1/2

GM Kekelidze- GM Benjamin 1/2-1/2

IM Kappengut- Harris 1-0

Chandran- Balaskrishnan 1-0

and we shall see a Drawn Match 2-2

Rabin's Take on the Epic Duel Between The Manhattan Applesauce and Baltimore Kingfishers

The Manhattan Applesauce and the Baltimore Kingfishers are the only Eastern teams who were able to beat Sandy to get to the USCL tonight! Both teams have solid 4.5-3.5 scores and are trying to rise to secure playoff spots. Therefore, I'll give you a video of Warren Haynes' "River's Gonna Rise." Its the second track of his Grammy nominated Man In Motion album that I reviewed back in May: Man in Motion Review.

In the Boston- New England match that knocked NE out of playoff hopes, I predicted the match correctly but only 1/4 games. Let's see how I do tonight!

* I am republishing this post after the start-time of the round because I found out just now that the line-ups have drastically changed. I figured as along as I was home and haven't observed any of the games yet anyway, I may as well change the predictions.

GM Romanenko- GM Huschenbeth 1-0 I still don't know much about Huschenbeth but, given his game against Finegold earlier this season, it seem's like he's a little out of shape.

IM Vovsha- IM Enkhbat 1/2-1/2 A wild theoretical duel will fiddle out to a draw!

IM Mandizha- Balasubramanian 1-0 Mr. "Ferari" Farai is a beast.... He's also playing a lower rated, non-IM!

WIM Battsetseg- Smith 1-0 Smith has been on fire lately so anything could happen, but Battsetseg has to be considered a favorite!

and with a very different last-minute lineup, the result shall be the same,  Manhattan Wins 2.5-1.5

Crosby, Stills & Nash Wow the Crowds at NYC's Beacon Theater, October 20, 2012

You'd expect the three musketeers to be retired in San Diego. Contrarily, Crosby, Stills & Nash are as active as they were back in their 1969 Woodstock days. On Saturday, October 20, I was one of hundreds of fans seeing them at the fourth of their five 2012 shows at New York City's Beacon Theater. It was near the end of their touring season however, as they have been roaming around all year. On July 17, they released their first live album in 20 years, CSN 2012.

CSN doesn't sound exactly as they did 40 years ago, but at least you get to see them all. While it would have been nice to hear “Y” Neil Young, you did get to hear the three founding members David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. Each time I saw CSN Live (the other time was in 2009 at Jones Beach), I saw the stage order from left to right as Crosby-Nash- Stills. I wonder why? Maybe the band name “Crosby Nash and Stills” just wouldn't have the same rhythm.

The stars weren't with out some new talent however. The most noted newbie was James Raymond, the keyboardist. Graham claims otherwise but I don't think he would have gotten his stardom without being Crosby's son. Despite such natural succession, his contribution of solos and the song he penned, “Lay Me Down” was appreciated!

The old fogie who made the biggest impression, was Stills, who remains one of the most underrated guitar players. His Claptonesque ability to play fast, upbeat or slow solos was supported by his whammy bar in his solo in Crosby's “Deja Vu.” “My job is to write the weird shit”, Crosby joked as he introduced the song.

CSN is also famous for pulling out some out-of-the-blue covers. In 2009, they played the Grateful Dead's “Uncle Johns Band.”. “We don't have any business playing this next one, but why the hell not, “ Crosby said before they played it. This time around, they chose Bob Dylan's love ballad, “Girl From North Country.”

Of course you can't blame the band for trying to produce new material, but to brutally honest, CSN should stick to its original Rock-and-Roll-Hall-of-Fame-level material. The second set, which included “Deja Vu”, “Wooden Ships,” “49 Bye-Byes,” “Our House,” and other major hits, was absolutely phenomenal. However, I didn't appreciate some of the newer songs in the first set, such as “Almost Gone”, a political piece Graham wrote about Bradley Manning, an ex US soldier, who is now in solitary confinement for releasing military secrets to WikiLeaks. This song was appropriate for Crosby and Nash's ad-hoc show at Occupy Wall Street but not a concert.

If CSN sticks to its original roots, the band has a good shot to remain a successful band, well into its members' 70s. Maybe one of these days, we will even see C, S and N tour with their friend Y!

*I posted videos for the songs I referenced in the review. For a few of the songs, I could not find a video for the October 20 show, so I posted one for a different 2012 date.

Who should win The "T Series?", the Boston Blitz or the New England Nor'Easters?

I'm not sure if the term "The T Series" actually exists, but I am going to borrow it from the "Subway Series." During last night's horrific hurricane, I got a mediocre 2/4 of game and dismal 6/16 of match predictions correct.

I'm not gonna waste time predicting the other matches for now as their lineups will likely change at least a little bit. Those will come soon, as quickly as needed! For a battle to see who reigns supreme in Boston, I shall share with you a 1976 live rendition of Boston's "More Than a Feeling."

Anyway onwards to the predictions!:

IM Zierk- FM Riordan 1/2-/2 Zierk is a favorite but he hasn't been playing much recently, now that he started MIT, and Riordan is a pretty solid player!

IM Yedidia- SM Shmelov 0-1 As shown in his recent GOTW draw with GM Holt, Shmelov is good at mixing things up!

FM Gulamali- FM Bournival 1-0 Gulamali has been a tear this season with a 3/4 record and 2611 performance rating- enough said!

FM Chase- Miller 1-0 These are two players who I have played against several times before. Chase shall steer the game away from complications with a KIA and be victorious.

and Shmelov and Gulamali will keep Boston's playoff hopes alive; Boston wins 2.5-1.5!

The End is Approaching: Rabin Predicts the Results of the 2012 USCL Season's Week 9, Part 1

I've been on a tear with match predictions; the last three consecutive nights I got 3/4 correct. I did have a little bit of luck last Wednesday however, as only got 7/16 or 43.75% of game predictions correct.

In honor of the great Hurricane Sandy, I shall share with you a live version of "Hurricane" from one of my favorite Israeli-American bands Soulfarm for my Youtube video of the night!

The Carolina Cobras give Rating and Time Odds to the Dallas Destiny

IM Schroer- GM Sadorra 0-1 We all know Schroer has the capability of playing solid chess, but Sadorra is also good at mixing stuff up!

GM Holt- FM Korley 1-0

Jones-Safin 1/2-1/2

Guenther- Mu 0-1

and wins from the GMS shall lead the Destiny to victory, Dallas wins 2.5-1.5

The Miami Sharks and the Los Angeles Vibe Shall Attempt to Break Their 1-1 Tied Lifetime Record

GM Becerra- IM Amanov 1-0

IM Kiewra- SM Perez 1-0

FM Rodriguez- FM Kavutskiy 1/2-1/2

Korba- Rosenthal 0-1 a toss-up between two of the league's underrated youngsters... I'll go with Rosenthal as he has more league experience under his belt.

and Miami shall earn a plus lifetime score against LA, Miami wins 2.5-1.5

The St. Louis Arch Bishops shall Attempt to Maintain a Positive Lifetime Record against the Arizona Scorpions (score currently 1.5-.5)

GM Diamant- IM Molner 1-0

IM Altounian- IM Kannappan 1/2-1/2

IM Bregadze- IM Mohandesi 1-0

Chakraborty- Hendrickson 0-1 a toss up, but I'm gonna go with Hendrickson after seeing his stellar performance at the recent SPICE cup, where he gained almost 60 rating points!

and with a margin of error in mind, ST. Louis Shall win 3-1

Two of the Western Division Veteran Heavy-Hitters Duke it Out: The Seattle Sluggers vs the San Francisco Mechanics

GM Akobian- GM Bhat 1-0

GM Kraai- IM Orlov 1-0

Sinanan- FM Lee 1-0

Wheeler- Feng 1/2-1/2

and Seattle Shall Make San Francisco's playoff prospects minimal; Seattle Wins 2.5-1.5

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

The Expected Results of the 2012 USCL Season's Week 8, Western Edition!

Last night, reached a personal best! I got 75% of both game and match predictions correct ( 3/4 and 12/16 respectively). Let's see if I can keep up my Nostradamus skills for tomorrow night's matches:)

As I added Hot Tuna's December 1 show at the Beacon, show to my calendar, I'll share a 2011 rendition of "I Know You Rider" of theirs for my acclaimed Youtube Video of the night! Of course, I did not forget my promise about the CSN review; that'll be published by the end of the week!

Teams with Inverse Scores (2-5 and 5-2 respectively) Duke it Out!: The San Francisco Mechanics vs The Dallas Destiny

GM Bhat- GM Chirila 1-0

IM Wang- GM Kraai 1/2-1/2 Wang has solid 2-0 this season thus far, but is playing his first GM of the year. I don't think Kraai will push for much after he equalizes...

FM Sevian- Safin 1-0 A toss-up but Sevian is younger and has more time for opening preparation. Look at his win in the New York Times over Manhattan player Alex King for an example of his opening wonders....

Chiang- Wheeler 1-0

and San Francisco's playoff chances shall remain alive, San Francisco Wins 2.5-1.5

The Seattle Sluggers shall Attempt to Maintain its Plus Lifetime Score ( now 1.5-.5) Against the Carolina Cobras

GM Akobian- IM Schroer 1-0

FM Korley- FM Mikhailuk 0-1

Sinanan- FM Simpson 1-0

Jones- Feng 1-0

Seattle Wins 3-1

The Arizona Scorpions and the Miami Sharks shall Attempt to Break Their Tied 3-3 Lifetime Record

IM Molner- GM Becerra 1/2-1/2 A complete toss-up... At first I thought Mac would pull off an upset, then I changed my mind that Becerrra would come through and then I said draw... In 2011, Mac scored 1.5/2 against Beccerra... He's been playing pretty solid chess this season, so I'll say draw!

IM Ginsburg- SM Perez  1-0

FM Adamson- FM Rodriguez 1-0

Rosenthal- Atoufi 1/2-1/2

and Arizona will gain a plus lifetime score against Miami; Arizona wins 3-1

The Los Angeles Vibe Shall Attempt to Keep St. Louis Archbishops off the Scoreboard in their Lifetime Record ( LA currently leads 2-0)

IM Amanov- GM Finegold 0-1

IM Kannappan- IM Kiewra 1-0

Kavutskiy- IM Bregadze 0-1

Larson- FM Yanayt 0-1

and St. Louis will in fact defeat LA for the first time; St. Louis wins 3-1

Rabin's Winning Picks for the 2012 USCL Season's Week 8, Eastern Edition

Last Wednesday I did awesome predicting the match results, predicting 3/4, 75% correctly. However, I definitely had a lot of luck as my game predictions were pretty lame, 6/16, 37.5%. Readers are going to have tow wait for my review of Crosby, Stills and Nash's show last night; for now I'll share you a phenomenal rendition they did of Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country." This video happens to be from a different night of the tour, but they did it last night too.

The 2011 USCL Champions The New York Knights vs their 2010 Predecessors: The New England Nor'easters

GM Gelashvili- GM Shankland 1/2-1/2

FM Riordan- GM Charbonneau 0-1

SM Herman- FM Chase 1-0

Pellows- Barayev 1-0

and New York Wins 2.5-1.5

The Manhattan Applesauce Give Time Odds to The Boston Blitz (79-101 min)

IM Vovsha- GM Perelshteyn 1/2-1/2 many onlookers will be amazed by all the "complications" in this game that will in reality be part of the preparation of two theoreticians.... Perelshteyn will equalize at the end of the day and will not go for much more...

FM Gulamali- IM Schneider 0-1

Shvartsman- Vilenchuk 1/2-1/2

Krasik- Ryba 1-0

and two draws and two decisive results will lead to a Drawn Match 2-2

The Blind Date Between the Connecticut Dreadnoughts and the Philadelphia Inventors

GM Hess- GM Erenburg 1/2-1/2

FM Bartell- GM Kekelidze 1/2-1/2

Yuan- FM Gorman 0-1

FM Dehmelt- Chandran 1/2-1/2 as Dehmelt will see things going well for himself on the other boards, he won't push for much!

and Gorman shall lead Philadelphia to win 2.5-1.5

The Baltimore Kingfishers Shall Seek to Attempt to Equalize its Lifetime Score against the New Jersey Knockouts ( Score Currently 4.5-3.5 NJ)

GM Huschenbeth- GM Stripunsky 0-1

GM Gulko- Wang 1-0

Defibaugh- IM Kapengut 0-1

Balakrishnan- FM Zimmer 0-1

and New Jersey wins 3-1

Rabin's Predictions for the 2012 USCL Season's Week 7: Eastern Edition

I had exactly the same percentages last night as I did last Wednesday, 50% of match predictions and 43.75% of game predictions. I might not be doing the best, but at least I'm being consistent!

As I'm going to see Crosby Stills and Nash (unfortunately no Young) at the Beacon Saturday night, I'll give this live rendition of “Teach Your Children” for my acclaimed Youtube Video of the night!:

Of course you can expect a review of the aforementioned concert to a blog near you soon!

The Philadelphia Inventors Shall Try to Maintain Their Plus Score Against the Manhattan Applesauce (Lifetime Score is Currently 3-1)

GM Erenburg- GM Romanenko 1-0 I think Erenburg is a favorite, but he needs to wake up a little bit! He's currently 2.5-2.5 this season thus far.

IM Vovsha- FM Bartell 1/2-1/2 a close call between a draw and win for Vovsha!

FM Gorman- IM Milman 0-1

Smith- IM Costigan 1/2-1/2 I think IM Costigan is a favorite, but I predict Smith will hold things together for a draw!

And two draws and two decisive games will lead to a Drawn Match 2-2!

The New Jersey Knockouts and the Boston Blitz Shall Try to Break Their Even Lifetime Record (3-3)

GM Stripunsky- GM Sammour-Hasbun 1-0 Stripunsky will steer the game away from complications and snap the full point!

FM Gulamali- GM Benjamin 0-1

Wu- Martirosov 0-1

Liu- Burke 1-0

and 4 decisive games will lead to another Drawn Match 2-2!

The Blind Date between the New England Nor'easters and the Connecticut Dreadnoughts

GM Shankland- GM Kekelidze 1-0

SM Otchiyev- FM Riordan 1/2-1/2

FM Chase- Lowinger 1-0 Lowinger is making his league debut. I have played both of these tricky players a number of times and have pretty bad records against both of them. I think they're pretty close in strength but am going to give Chase the edge here since he has the white pieces.

Chandran- Pellows 1-0

and New England Shall Win 2.5-1.5

The Baltimore Kingfishers and the Great New York Knights Shall Attempt to Break Their Tied Lifetime Record (5.5-5.5)

GM Margvelashvili- GM Kacheishvili 1/2-1/2 In 2011, Kacheishvili won when these two Georgians played with the same colors. This time around, a draw sounds likely though!

FM Bodek- GM Kaufman 1/2-1/2

Defibaugh- Williams 1-0

Katz- FM Zimmer 0-1

and to remain objective, I'm gonna predict Baltimore to win 3-1. Prove me wrong Knights!I had exactly the same percentages last night as I did last Wednesday, 50% of match predictions and 43.75% of game predictions. I might not be doing the best, but at least I'm being consistent!

The Probable Results of the 2012 USCL Season's Week 7, Night 1

Last Monday, I was a miserable Nostradamus wannabe, predicting 0/4 matches correctly and a mere 3/16 games correctly. Wednesday night marked improvements as I got 2/4 matches and 7/16 games correct. I have to admit that the 50% match prediction percentage was pretty lucky though since even though I predicted all the games of the Boston- LA match incorrectly, my 2-2 drawn match prediction held true.

We are now beyond, or at least in, the seventh galaxy or week of the 2012 USCL season. Let's see what tomorrow night's matches shall look like!

The Carolina Cobras Get Time Odds Against a Roughly Evenly Rated St. Louis Arch Bishops

IM Schroer- GM Finegold 1/2-1/2

IM Kannappan- FM Korley 1-0 I saw Kannappan's interview with FM Mike Klein this afternoon; he seems pretty confident against GMs' so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt against my fellow New Yorker and non-GM.

FM Simpson- IM Bregadze 0-1

Larson- Jones 0-1

and despite giving time odds, the St. Louis Arch Bishops shall win 2.5-1.5

The Miami Sharks and the Seattle Sluggers Shall Attempt to Break Their 5.5-5.5 Tied Lifetime Record

GM Becerra- IM Orlov 1-0

FM Cozianu- SM Perez 1-0

FM Rodriguez- FM Collyer 1-0

Omori- Rosenthal 0-1

and in a match with all decisive results, Miami Shall win 3-1

The Dallas Destiny and the Arizona Scorpions Shall Attempt to Break Their 2-2 Tied Lifetime Record

GM Sadorra- GM Barcenilla 1-0

IM Molner- GM Holt 1/2-1/2 My instincts told me Molner would lose.. Second thoughts told me a wild tactical melee will lead to a peaceful result. I'll go with the latter!

Safin- FM Atoufi 1-0

Chakraborty- Guenther 1-0

and the Dallas Destiny (2367) pulls of a quote on quote upset against the Arizona Scorpions (2419) Dallas wins 2.5-1.5.

A Civil War in California: The Los Angeles Vibe vs The San Francisco Mechanics

GM Khachiyan- IM Naroditsky 1/2-1/2

IM Zilberstein- WGM Abrahamyan 1-0

FM Yanayt- FM Liou 1/2-12

Wheeler- FM Casella 0-1

and we shall see a Drawn Match 2-2

Rabin's Predicted Results for the 2012 USCL Season's FinalInterdivision Week, Part 2

As I'm writing this post on the night of Lennon's birthday I'll share with you all a  rendition of Paul McCartney's  famous tribute to John, "Here Today."

I was actually at that show on July 16, 2011. Check out my review here:

The Philadelphia Inventors Shall Tryto Defeat (or even draw) the San Francisco Mechanics for the FirstTime

GM Erenburg- GM Kraai 1-0

IM Naroditsky- SM Fisher 1-0

FM Gorman- FM Lee 1-0

Wheeler-IM Costigan 1/2-1/2

and Philadelphia shall get on the Scoreboard against San Francisco, Philadelphia wins 2.5-1.5

The First Date Between the BostonBlitz and the Los Angeles Vibe

SM Sammour-Hasbun-GM Khachiyan 1-0

IM Kiewra- IMZierk 0-1 In the 2010 USCL Season, FM Zierk (SF) drew FM Kiewra (DAL)with the white pieces. This time around, not only are they playing with opposite colors, they both are on different teams, Boston and LA respectively. Furthermore, both players improved considerably, bothgaining the IM title since then. Instincts tell me Zierk is going tosucceed though!

Martirosov- GM Abrahamyan 0-1 Vadim is a rock but Tatev has shown that she is good at mixing things up with the black pieces!

Korba- Hanks 1-0 I don't know much about Korba, but he has been on a roll the last fewweeks!

And my old teammates shall neither succeed or fail Drawn Match 2-2

Two Teams with 3-2 Scores in Their Respective Divisions Go for Mayhem: The Seattle Sluggers vs The Manhattan Applesauce

FM Cozianu- GM Romanenko 0-1

IM Schneider- FM Milat 1-0

Sinanan-Shvartsman 1-0 I see a toss up here between one player Sinanan, whohas had all decisive wins so far this season, vs the solid Shvartsmanwho drew two solid masters thus far. Something tells me Sinanan willwin to continue to a rock star 4-0 score.

King-Lessler 1-0

and Manhattan shall get revenge for Seattle winning their first lifetime match Manhattan wins 3-1

The Arizona Scorpions Shall Try to Defeat (or even draw) the Baltimore Kingfishers for the First Time

IM Molner- GM Margvelashvili 1/2-1/2

IM Enkhbat- IMAltounian 1/2-1/2

IM Ginsburg-Defibaugh 1-0

Selzler- Mateer1-0 Selzler should be a favorite but this game also depends on the players' stamina and having either a poor or good start to the season. Selzler had a disappointing first half with two losses, while Mateer has a promising 1.5/2 score this season thus far.

The Results Everyone Shall See in the 2012 USCL Season's Final Interdivision Week

Last week, I did great with game predictions, getting 10/16 of them correct on Monday night( a personal record! :) )and 9/16 on Wednesday night. I also got a successful 3/4 match predictions Wednesday night. Luck didn't come my way Monday night however, when slim margins made my match predictions only 25% correct, even though my game predictions were 62.5% correct.

On the larger picture, I give you my total percentages for the first half of the season! I got 19/40 or 47.5% of match predictions and 68/160 or 42.5% of game predictions correct. Let's see if I can do better in the second half!!

In honor of John Lennon's upcoming 72nd birthday on Tuesday, when these games will be played, I give you a 1975 rendition of his "Imagine".

A More Balanced Lineup than Usual from the Connecticut Dreadnoughts vs the Underdogs: The Miami Sharks

GM Kekelidze- GM Becerra 1-0 Kekelidze hasn't been playing up to par so far this season but I think he'll pull out a positional squeeze in a KID here!

FM Rodriguez- IM Sarkar 0-1

SM Otchiyev- Haskel 1-0

Rosenthal- Colas 1/2-1/2

With margin of error in mind, I'll say Connecticut wins 3-1!

The Carolina Cobras Shall Attempt to get on the Scoreboard against the New England Nor'easters (NE leads 3-0)

GM Ivanov- IM Schroer 1-0

FM Korley- FM Riordan 1/2-1/2

IM Yedidia- FM Simpson 1-0

Jones- Goldberg 1/2-1/2

and New England will be 4-0 lifetime against Carolina, New England wins 3-1

The Only Two Teams That Could Claim They Won More than One USCL Championship Duke it Out: The New York Knights vs the Dallas Destiny

GM Gelashvili- GM Chirila 1-0

GM Holt- GM Charbonneau 1/2-1/2

Katz- FM Getz 0-1

Guenther- Barayev 0-1

and my beloved Knights shall be successful this time around! NY wins 2.5-1.5

The First Date Between the St. Louis Arch Bishops and the New Jersey Knockouts

GM Finegold- GM Stripunsky 0-1

GM Benjamin- IM Kannappan 1-0

IM Bregadze- IM Kapengut 1-0

Balakrishnan- Larson 1/2-1/2

and New Jersey shall edge out a victory! NJ wins 2.5-1.5

I realize that I did predict a 4-0 knockout to the West; you're all (or as the Carolina and Dallas teams might say  y'all :) ) going to have to trust me that I wasn't biased!

The 2012 Season of the Commercial Chess League of NY Has Officially Begun!

Despite the fact that my last several posts have been USCL predictions, I am proud to say this has not entirely become a USCL blog. With that in mind, here's my report on the Commerical League's 2012 Season opener last night. For the fifth season in a row, I am a member of the Delfies Dilemma, led by the infamous captain Phil Toledo. The last three consecutive years, we won the Division A title each time.

However, I will not take much credit, as the last few seasons, I have played only occasionally, when I was home from school in New York. Last year, I only played one game. This year however, I definitely plan on playing most of the matches.

Last night, we started the season with a 3-1 win over the veteran team MetLife. On board 1, Nick Kleszczewski upset our Ashok Gandhi. On Board 2, our Joel Hernandez, who was making his league debut, defeated the league's president Phil Lehpamer. On Board 3, your loyal blogger defeated Ralph Frisch( see game below). On Board 4, our Vladimir Gramagain defeated Vladimir Steshenko.

Find more information about the league and the 2012 Rosters, see .

As He's at the Marshall, Watching the Knights in Progress, Rabin Predicts Wednesday Night's Results!

This time around, readers are going to have wait for my stats as I'm making these predictions before tonight finishes. I dropped by the Marshall tonight, was asked to play a filler game and ended up getting a forfeit win... So I decided to stick by the club to see how the Knights do and make my predictions while I'm at it!

As I officially added the 11/14 Barclays Center stop on The Who's 2012 Quadrophenia Tour on my concert list today, I give you a 2007 live edition of "The Real Me" for my video of the day! Stay tuned for a blog near you for a review of that concert. See my review of Daltrey's  2011 Tommy show in Boston:

The Carolina Cobras Finally Face a Lineup with a Similar Rating to It's Own: That of the Miami Sharks

IM Schroer- GM Becerra 0-1 A hard one to predict... With colors reversed, they drew in 2009.  Schroer is unpredictable as this season thus far he drew G Benjamin, lost to IM Amanov, lost to GM Hess and beat GM Bhat.. However, in a complicated Grunfeld or KID, I see Becerra coming through in this one!

FM Rodriguez- FM Korley 1-0

Jones- Recio 1/2-1/2

Rosenthal-Mu 0-1

and despite a minimal rating gap, Miami shall win 2.5-1.5

The St. Louis Arch Bishops Shall Attempt to Even up its Lifetime Record against the Seattle Sluggers

GM Finegold- FM Cozianu 1-0 Finegold will steer the game away from complications and win a very long game!

FM Mikhailuk- IM Kannappan 0-1 As Google tells me I should do, I'm Feeling Lucky!

IM Bregadze- FM Collyer 1-0

Sinanan- Larson 1-0

and St. Louis shall indeed even up its record against Seattle: St. Louis Wins 3-1!

The Dallas Destiny and the LA Vibe Shall Attempt to Break Their Tied Lifetime Record (2-2)

GM Sadorra- GM Khachiyan 0-1

IM Amanov- GM Holt 0-1

FM Getz- WGM Abrahamyan 1/2-1/2

Korba-Guenther 1-0

and LA will earn a positive lifetime record against Dallas: LA Wins 2.5-1.5

The Arizona Scorpions and the San Francisco Mechanics Attempt to Break Their Tied Lifetime Record (2.5-2.5)

IM Molner- GM Kraai 1-0 I'm not sure what it is, but something tells me the beast tactician shall defeat the solid one here!

IM Zilberstein- IM Altounian 1/2-1/2

IM Ginsburg- FM Liou 1-0

Viswanadha- WFM Mateer- 1-0

and Arizona will earn a positive lifetime record against San Francisco!: Arizona wins 2.5-1.5

The Second Half of the 2012 USCL Season is Approaching!: Rabin Predicts the Results for Tomorrow night!

I did not do as great last Wednesday as I did the Monday before. I could mislead my readers by just stating that I had got 2/3 or 66% of match predictions correct. However, I'll give the whole picture; a mere 2/12 or 16.67% of my game predictions were correct.

In honor of the beginning of October, I thought i'd share this song for my famed Youtube video of the USCL night!

Two Heavy-hitter teams bring Double GM line ups: The New York Knights vs the Connecticut Dreadnoughts

GM Kacheishvili- GM Hess 1/2-1/2

GM Kekelidze- GM Charbonneau 1-0

Williams- Harris 1-0

Colas-Checa 1-0

and to remain objective, I predict the Dreadnoughts will defeat my beloved Knights, Connecticut wins 2.5-1.5. Prove me wrong Knights!

The "Underrated" Boston Blitz (at least according to Krasik!) Take on a Slightly Higher Rated Philadelphia Inventors

GM Perelyshteyn- GM Erenburg 1/2-1/2

SM Fisher- FM Gulamali 1-0 This game is more or less a toss up..  Most certainly, we shall see a decisive result.

Vilenchuk-FM Gorman 1/2-1/2

Daly-Krasik 0-1 Another toss-up between two relatively inactive players as of late.... My instincts tell me the league's premier trash talker will win! (I haven't heard much from Ilya lately however.)

and with two draws and two decisive results, we shall see a Drawn Match 2-2

Two GMs are generally better than One: Shall the New Jersey Knockouts defeat the Manhattan Applesauce with one more GM?!

GM Romanenko- GM Stripunsky 1/2-1/2

GM Benjamin- IM Vovsha 1-0

IM Milman- IM Kapengut 1-0

Balakrishnan-Smith 0-1 I'll openly confess that Smith defeated your loyal blogger in pool this weekend! For a double whammy, I also have to confess that Balkrishnan beat your loyal blogger at this year's Eastern Class Championship back in March. However, that was after one terrible oversight, in which I hung an exchange in a much better position. With Smith's third place win in the Week 3 Game of the Week contest, it is clear, he has improved!

and one GM shall be sufficient for Manhattan! Manhattan wins 2.5-1.5

Shall the Baltimore Kingfisher's Earn Its first Victory against the New England Nor'easters?!

IM Enkhbat- GM Ivanov 1/2-1/2

IM Vigorito- GM Kaufman 1/2-1/2

Defibaugh- Wang 1-0

Pellows-Zimmer 0-1 In his first two USCL encounters, I predicted Pellows would win against experts. This time around however, he's playing a solid master who's 2-0 in the season so far.

and Baltimore shall indeed earn its first win against New England! Baltimore wins 3-1

Rabin's Prognostics for the 2012 USCL Season's Interdivison Week #2, Part 2!!

I got the following comment of constructive criticism to last night's set of predictions:

Your problem is that you just simply pick the favorites based on whoever has the better title or the better rating. There's not much analysis behind this.
I definitely do think there's some truth that comment. There are definitely times I predict more based then titles and ratings than else when I have to predict results about players I never saw play before. Things change later into the season each year though, when I get to see the "unknowns" get their feet wet.
On the contrary, what ever my motives were for last night's predictions, I did awesome! I got my 3/4 or 75% match predictions correct and a personal record of 12/20 or 60% game predictions correct. I am now sitting on top of the world! Let's see if I'll have to get down tonight:)

The Miami Sharks Shall Seek Revenge against New England for Its 2010 Championship Loss
GM Becerra- GM Shankland 0-1 After I predicted Shanky would draw Becerra in their 2010 Championship encounter, he told me I should have predicted otherwise. Since he played a good amount of solid chess, gaining a fair amount of points in Europe this summer, I'l say my fellow Brandeisian win this time!
GM Ivanov- FM Rodriguez 1-0
Alvarez- Wang 1-0
Pellows- Recio 1-0
and revenge shall not be claimed: New England wins 3-1

The Boston Blitz Brings a Heavy Lineup Against Their Nemesis, the Dallas Destiny
GM Chirila- SM Sammour-Hasbun 0-1
Shmelov- GM Holt 0-1
FM Xiong- Martirosov 1/2-1/2
Liu-Guenther 1-0
and the Boston Blitz shall score its first win against Dallas! Boston wins 2.5-1.5

The First Date Between the Newbies, The Connecticut Dreadnoughts and the St. Louis Archbishops
GM Hess- GM Finegold 1-0
IM Kannappan- GM Kekelidze 0-1
IM Sarkar- IM Bregadze 1/2-1/2
Karlow- Tanenbaum 1-0
and Connecticut Shall Win 2.5-1.5

The Results-to-be of the 2012 USCL Season's Interdivision Week #2: Part 1

To state it nicely, I didn't do the best job predicting the matches last week. I did pretty lame last Monday night, predicting 1/4 matches and 6/16 games correctly. Last Wednesday I did even worse, predicting 1/4 matches and a mere 4/16 games correctly.

What was interesting to me however, was the fact the one match I did predict correctly was the one I was most likely to biased toward: The New York Knights, my favorite team vs the Boston Blitz, the team I rooted for during the one year I played on it in 2010. I did put up this Facebook Status last Wednesday night:

"my predictions may have not been the best tonight: only got 1/4 matches right... However, I'm happy the two NY teams gave whoopings to the two Bahstan area teams!!"

Enough ranting about last week's results/ my failure to predict. Let's see if things shall be better in the East or West tomorrow night! ( If you don't get the classic rock reference in this sentence, wait for the end of the blog post!

The New Jersey Knockouts and the Carolina Cobras Shall Attempt to Break Their Tied 3-3 Lifetime Record

GM Benjamin- IM Schroer 1-0

FM Korley- GM Gulko 0-1 Korley is fully capable of being a successful underdog, as he expressed in his interview with FM Mike Klein. Last year, he beat NJ's IM Kapengut, but Gulko is on another level.

Klemm-Mu 0-1

Swaminathan- Balakrishnan 0-1

and NJ and Carolina will continue to have a tied lifetime score as we shall see a Drawn Match 2-2

The Veteran Teams that also Happen to Have a Tied Lifetime Score (2.5-2.5) Duke it Out: The San Francisco Mechanics vs the New York Knights

GM Kraai- GM Kacheishvili 1/2-1/2

SM Herman-IM Naroditsky 0-1  In 2009, Herman, then rated 2275, beat Naroditsky, then rated 2371. Three years later, both players have improved significantly. Objectively, I have to give Naroditsky an edge here.

FM Liou- FM Bodek 1/2-1/2

Katz- Viswanadha 1-0

and SF and NY shall also still have an even lifetime score as we shall see another Drawn Match 2-2

The First Date Between the Los Angeles Vibe and the Philadelphia Inventors

GM Khaciyan-GM Erenburg 0-1

SM Fisher- IM Kiewra 1/2-1/2

WGM Abrahamyan- SM Minear 1-0

FM Shahade- Korba 1-0

and Philadelphia shall win 2.5-1.5

Tit for Tat: The Arizona Scorpions Seek Revenge for their 0-1 Record against the Manhattan Applesauce

GM Romanenko- IM Molner 1-0

IM Altounian- IM Mandizha 1/2-1/2

Shvartsman- IM Mohandesi 1-0

Chakraborty- Ryba 1-0

and tit does not respond to tat.... Manhattan wins 2.5-1.5

After Six Years of Never Playing Against Each Other, the Baltimore Kingfishers and the Seattle Sluggers Go to War

It's sort of crazy that Kingfishers have been in the league since its beginning in 2005 and the Sluggers have since 2006 and they haven't played yet.

GM Margvelashvili- FM Cozianu 1-0

IM Mikhailuk- IM Palkidze 1-0

Balasubramanian- FM Collyer 1/2-1/2

Sinanan- Selzler 1-0 To my surprise, Sinanan beat FM Adamson convincingly with black last week, so why not predict he'll win this week?!

and Seattle shall succeed: Seattle wins 2.5-1.5

So for my bonus prediction, things will be slightly better in the east as the Eastern Divison will beat the Western Division 3-2 tomorrow night!

Rabin's Express Predictions for the 2012 USCL Season Week 3 : Eastern Edition

I didn't do too great Monday Night. I got 1/4 match predictions and 6/16 game predictions correct. Let's see what results, we shall see tonight! As I've been pretty busy the last few days , I'm not going to explain all of my predictions this time. Just bear with me; they're all my objective predictions!

For my express predictions, why not share the Marrakesh Express?!

The New York Knights vs the Boston Blitz: a Mirror Image of the Yankee's 2-1 Score Against the Red Sox Last Week!

GM Kacheishvili- GM Perelshteyn 1-0
FM Gulamali- SM Herman 0-1
Williams- Vilenchuk 1/2-1/2
Krasik-Katz 1-0

and just like the Yankees gave the Red Sox one more spanking last week, the NY will win 2.5-1.5

The Philadelphia Inventors and the New Jersey Knockouts Attempt to Break Their 3-3 Tied Lifetime Record

GM Erenburg- GM Stripunsky 1-0
GM Benjamin- SM Fisher 1-0
SM Minear- Wu 1-0
Burke-FM Shahade 0-1

and Philadelphia shall get a plus record against NJ! Philadelphia wins 3-1

The Manhattan Applesauce Attempts to beat the New England Nor'easters For the First Time
( currently 2-0 NE)

GM Ivanov- IM Vovsha 1-0
IM Schneider- FM Riordan 1-0
IM Yedidia- IM Milman 1/2-1/2
Smith- Goldberg 0-1

and New England will keep its lifetime perfect record against Manhattan: New England wins 2.5-1.5

The New Monster in the League, the Connecticut Dreadnoughts Duke it out with the Veteran Baltimore Kingfishers

GM Hess- GM Margelashvili 1-0
GM Kaufman- GM Kekelidze 0-1
Harris- Defibaugh 1/2-1/2
Zimmer-Colas 1/2-1/2

and Connecticut shall do some damage. Connecticut Wins 3-1

Rabin Predicts the Results of the 2012 USCL Season's Week 3: Western Edition

Ok, its true-- I wasn't quite "Back in the High Life Again" last Wednesday evening, as I promised my readers I would be. I did a mediocre job, predicting 2/4 matches and 7/16 games correctly. However, I certainly did better than two nights before that (0/4 matches, 3/16 games)! It's getting better all the time, so I'm optimistic with my predictions for tomorrow night!

I squeezed another Beatles reference in there for the Jewish New Year.. !שׁנה טובה לכולם

Of course most chess players won't be taking off for the holiday the next two days though, so lets get to business!

The Miami Sharks and Dallas Destiny Shall Try to Break their 6.5-6.5 Lifetime Tied Record

13 games is a long amount to still be tied, especially in team play!

SM Perez- GM Sadorra 0-1 Perez has yet to show his quick improvements he had in the last year or so this season. Anything is possible, but he's playing his highest rated opponent yet this season and is 0-2 so far, so I'll have to give Sadorra the edge.

FM Getz- FM Rodriguez 1-0 My fellow New Yorker is going to bore Rodriguez to death!

Alvarez- FM Xiong 0-1 Instincts!

Chiang- Rosenthal 1-0 Rosenthal is one of those perennial USCL upset machines, so you never know what to expect, but something tells me Chiang is more likely to come through.

4-0 seems like too much... with a margin of error in mind, Dallas will win 3.5-.5

The St. Louis Arch Bishops Wants to Even Up its Lifetime Record Against the San Francisco Mechanics

GM Finegold- GM Bhat 1-0 It took me a while to decide between Finegold winning, or drawing. He came through last week against Huschenbeth when I predicted a draw, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt!

FM Liou- IM Kannappan 0-1 So far, I predicted he'd beat Perez and Kaufman, so why not Liou too?! ( oh yeah, that rhymed!)

IM Bregadze- FM Sevian 1-0 Georgian school boy shall beat US young tactician here!

FM Lee- Larson 1-0 Larson did beat Selzler last week so is obviously capable of upsets, but with the white pieces and big rating edge, you've got to give Lee the edge!

St. Louis Wins 3-1. While San Francisco has a 70 point rating edge in this match, all of its' eggs come from one basket on board 4. On all the other boards, St. Louis has rating edges.

Love or Hate at First Sight-TBD: The Carolina Cobras vs The LA Vibe

IM Schroer- IM Amanov 1-0 If Schroer, can upset a bunch of GMS, why not do the same to an IM?!

WGM Abrahamyan- FM Korley 1-0 Korley often surprises me, beating the likes of Kekelidze. Instincts tell me Abrahamyan will succeed in this struggle though!

Jones- Kavutskiy 1/2-1/2 two solid players!

FM Casella- Swaminathan 1-0 Casella never draws in the USCL!

LA Edges out the Victory 2.5-1.5

Last But Not Least, The Seattle Sluggers and the Arizona Scorpions Shall Attempt to Break Their 3.5-1.5 Tied Lifetime Score

GM Akobian- IM Molner 1-0 Akobian is fresh from helping out the U.S team at the Olympiad and probably has some opening preparation up his sleeve. In 2009, I was rooming with Molner at the Chicago Open, when they drew in a wild Caro Kann. That time Molner was white.

IM Ginsburg- IM Orlov 1/2-1/2 Ginsburg will win the opening battle and get a reasonable advantage, but it won't lead to victory!

Sinanan- FM Adamson 0-1 Instincts here!

FM Atoufi- Feng 1-0 Last year, they drew when Feng had the white pieces.. With colors reversed, I think Atoufi will give his team a point!

and Arizona will have a plus lifetime record against Seattle: Arizona wins 2.5-1.5

The Destined Results of the 2012 USCL Season's First Interdivision Week

What can I say? I did a terrible job predicting last night's results. I got 0/4 match predictions right and only 3/16 game predictions right. The one match I predicted to be a draw (Seattle vs New Jersey) turned out to have the only decisive result! Tomorrow night, I will be back in the high life again though!

The Constant Underdogs: The Carolina Cobras Vs the New Powerhouse: The Connecticut Dreadnoughts that David Pruess Predicted to be the 2012 Eastern Division Champions

IM Schroer- GM Hess 0-1 You never know with Schroer as he often does pull of some awesome upsets.. He did defeat Gelashvili in week 1. However, with a huge rating edge you have to give Hess the nod here.

GM Kekelidze- FM Korley- 1-0  similar logic to board 1!

FM Simpson- Harris 1-0 Harris is higher rated but Simpson has shown in previous league play, he could defeat some higher rated players!

Colas- Swaminathan 1/2-1/2 Swaminathan will equalize out of the opening and hold his own!

Connecticut shall continue on a path towards Pruess' prediction: Connecticut wins 2.5-1.5

Two Veteran Teams Shall Try to Break their Tied Lifetime Record: The Boston Blitz Vs the Miami Sharks

SM Sammour-Hasbun- GM Becerra 1-0 I had a very hard time predicting this results... My instincts tell me Jorge's wild complications will do him more good than harm though!

SM Perez- FM Gulamali 1-0 A wild guess for a game between to wild players!

Vilenchuk-FM Rodriguez 1/2-1/2 Vilenchuk is a Brandeis first year..  The last time the Boston Blitz recruited a Brandeisian was two years ago.. Who was that?--- Oh yeah, Evan Rabin, your loyal blogger. He didn't so well- got .5/2, so he got kicked off the team. Four years before that, another Brandeisian FM Steven Winer didn't do all that well in 2006 with a 1/3 score. He had a solid 1/2 score in 2005. So Brandeisians haven't had the best rep in the league, well at least on the Blitz;  GM Shankpanky has been a rock star on New England. Vilenchuk will turn the Brandeisian tide a bit; his first game, a draw will be the pivot!

Silberman-Krasik 0-1 I don't know Silberman but with a large rating edge, I think Krasik will succeed.

and all in all Boston shall win 2.5-1.5

Boston's Neighbors, the New England Nor'easters vs the Gmless but Strong Dallas Destiny

GM Shankland- GM Elect Holt 1-0 Alhough Holt is improving rapidly and recently achieved his third GM Norm, with a rating edge and the white pieces, I have to give the other Brandeisian in the league an edge here!

IM Wang- IM Vigorito 1/2-1/2 I don't know much about Wang but saw some of his results that are super solid. In the 2011 World Open, he had 6 draws and 3 wins. A draw is likely!

Wang-FM Xiong 1-0 Instincts tell me there's going to be an upset on this board!

Gater- Pellows 0-1. Despite being slightly lower rated, I think Pellows has an edge here. As he hasn't played much the last few years, I don't think his rating is quite up to his strength.

and after 4 grueling games end, with margin of error in mind, New England will win 3-1

The St. Louis Arch Bishops Duke it out for the First Time with The Baltimore Kingfishers

GM Finegold- GM Huschenbeth 1/2-1/2 I never knew Huschenbeth before this season. His Fide (2536) is slightly higher than Finegold's (2493). Finegold is pretty solid and has the white pieces, so I think the game will end in a draw.

GM Kaufman- IM Kannappan 0-1 Really a toss up between one of the best opening theoreticians in the US and a new guy in the US, who has a provisional 2481 USCF rating and drew GM Jimenez to tie for 1st in the St. Louis District Championships earlier this month.

IM Bregadze- Wang 1-0 White pieces and rating edge here.

Selzler-Larson 1-0 same note as board 3!

and St Louis Wins 2-5-1.5!

The Expected Results of the First Half of the 2012 USCL Season, Week 2!

It's only week 2 and already we're having an interdivision week! I definitely like the idea of having three interdivision weeks this year rather than 1 as in all previous seasons. This week, we will see five sets of teams duke it out for the first time. Without further ado, I give you Rabin's predictions for tomorrow night's matches! Last week I did pretty good; I predicted the results of 6 out of 8 matches 15 out of 32 games correctly.

The Mighty Manhattan Applesauce Shall Try to Even up its Lifetime Score with the Veteran San Francisco Mechanics

GM Kraai- GM Romanenko 1/2-1/2 I predicted Romanenko would draw last week and he ended up winning a masterpiece to earn Game of the Week; perhaps the combination of my prediction and voodoo will lead him to win another GOTW. However, this game between two solid GMs will likely be a draw!

IM Vovsha- IM Naroditsky 1-0 Not many 16 year olds are geniuses who could write books about positional chess. However, I think a wild theoretical line and tactical complications will lead Vovsha to victory here!

Liou-Shvartsman 1-0. I think these players are about equal in strength but Liou seems to have studied more chess recently as he earned an IM norm at the Metropolitian International in July.

King-Viswanadha 1-0. Viswanadha is an upcoming youngster who I saw win a few good games at the Northern California International this past January; however King is an unstoppable board 4- let's just declare him the 2012 Board 4 All-Star now!

and Manhattan shall indeed even up its lifetime score with SF, Manhattan wins 2.5-1.5

My Homies the NY Knights Duke it Out for the First Time with the Shiny LA Vibe

GM Gelashvili- IM Matikozyan 1-0. Matikozyan surprised me last year when he beat GM Wolff with black, so any result is possible, but with the GM title and the white pieces, you gotta give Gelashvili the edge!

IM Amanov- GM Lenderman 0-1 Similar logic to the game mentioned above!

Williams-Casella 1/2-1/2 Instincts!

Korba- Barayev 1/2-1/2 Instincts again!

NY defeats LA 1-0

Another First Date: The Arizona Scorpions vs the Philadelphia Inventors

IM Molner- GM Erenburg 0-1 Mac is indeed a beast but, something tells me Erenburg will defend against his wild attack and take the full point.

IM Bartell- IM Ginsburg 1-0 Bartell will continue the tare he had this summer-- Get'em guy!

FM Adamson- FM Gorman 1-0 Adamson will give the Israeli, now US FM a hard time in his league debut.

FM Dehmelt- FM Atoufi 1/2-12 As Philly will be doing welll on boards 1 and 2, Dehmelt will steer things to a peace. I played Dehmelt two years ago in a 1 day Grand Prix event in Allentown, PA. He was a point ahead of me, so I needed to win just to tie for first. I never had any dream of counter play.

Philadelphia wins 2.5-1.5

The New Joisy Knockouts try to Even-up its Lifetime Score against the Seattle Sluggers

FM Cozianu- GM Benjamin 0-1 Benjamin will obtain revenge for his 2010 loss to Cozianu!

GM Gulko-FM Mikhailuk 1-0 You never know what you're going to get with Gulko ! In 2008/2009, he had a combined whopping 8-0 score. In 2010, he had mediocre 2/5 score. Last year, he drew all three of his games. I think he's going to go back to his winning ways this season!

IM Milat- FM Hansen 1-0. I don't know all that much about either of these players, so I'll go with the higher rated player with the white pieces winning.

Klemm- Collyer 0-1 Similar reasoning to board 3 in this match!

and Seattle remains +1 lifetime against NJ- Drawn Match 2-2

Second Set of Predictions for 2012: The Western Division Opener!

I did pretty good in my predictions for last night, predicting three out of the four match points correctly. Manhattan drew New York when I thought they'd win. GM Romamenko surprised me by defeating Gelashvili, which would have helped my match point prediction, but to the contrary Bodek beat Zaikov.

On the other hand, I had somewhat subpar performance on my game points predictions, getting 43.75% correctly. I did pretty good on the first three matches, getting 7/12 on those but got an "0 for 4" for Baltimore-Philadelphia. Ironically, by predicting all four games incorrectly in that match, I the four games that led to a drawn match, allowed my match prediction be correct! Let's see how I do tonight!

Tonight we're going to be truckin' around the West Coast!

The Always Strong Miami Sharks vs the St Louis Arch Bishops Who Lost Hikaru

GM Becerra- GM Finegold 1-0 It will be a close call but Becerra is a USCL beast!

IM Priyadharshan- SM Perez 1-0 I know absolutely nothing about IM Priyadharshan; I'm gonna go on a whim and say he'll come out ahead with the white pieces.

FM Rodriguez- FM Eckert Rodriguez 1-0 coming back from a summer of chess in Europe, Rodriguez should be a favorite!

Hendrickson- Rosenthal 1-0 Rosenthal, who dealt plenty of upsets in previous seasons of the USCL, is quite unpredictable. However, with the white pieces and higher rating, I'll give Hendrickson an edge in his league debut.

And we shall see a Drawn Match 2-2!

The Veteran San Francisco Mechanics vs the Guys who Returned to the Western Division; the Carolina Cobras

GM Bhat- IM Schroer 1-0 Schroer is pretty solid, but with the black pieces, I don't think he'll hold agains Bhat.

FM Korley- GM Kraai 0-1 My fellow New Yorker Korley often does surprise some higher rated players but to be objective, I think Kraai has an edge!

FM Sevian- FM Simpson 0-1 Both players have had disappointing seasons in 2011. While I think Sevian, might objectively be a stronger player, my instincts tell me experience will outweigh youth here!

Mu- Wheeler 1-0 As Mu won the u2200 section of the 2011 World Open, ahead of myself and a few others who tied for second, I know he has a lot of stamina!

And Carolina will surprise the Mechanics with an upset draw! Drawn match 2-2

The Dallas Destiny Shall Seek to Even Up Their Lifetime Score Against the Seattle Sluggers

GM Chirila- FM Cozianu 1-0 GM and white pieces... hard to predict against Chirila

FM Mikhailuk- IM Wang 1/2-1/2 As he shown in years passed, Mikhailuk is considerably stronger with white than black. I think he'll try to play pretty solidly and Wang won't be able to win the full point

Safin- FM Collyer 1-0 I know absolutely nothing about either of these players, so I'll guess the guy with the higher rating and white pieces will win!

Lessler- Chiang 1/2-1/2 Wild Guess!
As I don't really know any of these players well, I'll have to give myself some margin of error on this one! Dallas wins 2.5-1.5

The LA Vibe and the Arizona Scorpions will break their 1.5-1.5 Lifetime Score!

IM Matikozyan- IM Molner 1/2-1/2 Molner will likely be the one pushing at the end, but peace will be the ultimate result!

IM Altounian- FM Kavutskiy 1-0 The white pieces and experience will give Altounian justice in this game!

FM Akopyan- IM Ginsburg 0-1 Akopyan is another mystery to me but with Ginsburg's superb opening preparation, I think he'll get the full point.

WFM Mateer- Korba 1-0. I first wrote Mateer would be an underdog against Casella but with a higher rating, more time on the clock than Korba,  and the white pieces to boot, I think she'll win!

Arizona will jump ahead in their lifetime score: Arizona wins 3.5-.5

Rabin's Predictions for the 2012 USCL Season Opening NIght!

Roll up, roll up for the Magical Mystery Tour! Step right this way! Roll up for the Magical Mystery Tour that is the 2012 USCL season. This year we said “goodbye” to the Chicago Blaze and hello to the Connecticut Dreadnoughts. “You say 'Goodbye' and I say “Hello, hello, hello.' I don't why you say 'Goodbye', I say 'Hello, hello, hello.”.....

OK, enough corny Beatles references; let's get to business: See Rabin's predictions for the opening of the Eastern division tomorrow night!

Last Year's Semifinals All Over Again: The Subway Series between the Manhattan Applesauce and New York Knights

GM Romanenko-GM Gelashvili 1/2-1/2 These Georgian GMS are scary but Romanenko is particularly solid, especially with the white pieces.

GM Lenderman- IM Milman 1-0 While Milman has been busy working long hours on Wall Street, Lenderman has been taking advantage of the Samford fellowship- Gotta give him the edge!

FM Zaikov- FM Bodek 1-0 While Bodek is higher rated, Zaikov is scary in league play. When he played for the Cobras in 2010, the last four consecutive weeks, he beat IM Krush, IM Lapshun, FM, soon to be IM Bartell, and IM Fernandez! I'm sure he'll want to have a good start for Manhattan.

Checa- King 0-1 Checa is a solid player for his age and will do his best for his league debut. However, at over 2300, King is a monster board 4. He will be one of Manhattan's greatest assets this season.
and the Manhattan Applesauce will get revenge: Manhattan wins 2.5-1.5

*Disclaimer: As I'm working for Chess in the Schools this year, I wasn't sure at first whether I'd root for the Knights or Applesauce. I ended up deciding rooting for the Knights, as I did since the league started except for my 1 year tenure on the Blitz, but these predictions as is all of mine are as objective as possible.

My Old Teammates the Boston Blitz vs the New Guys: The Connecticut Dreadnoughts

SM Sammour-Hasbun- GM Hess 0-1 In a tactical slugfest, the young GM, Yale student will come out on top.

GM Kekelidze- IM Zierk 1-0 As I said before, these Georgian GMS are scary!

FM Gulamali- WIM Yuan 1-0 I don't know much about either of these players but I'll go by Gulamali's rating edge and the white pieces.

Chandran- Hanks 1-0. Chandran is an up and coming youngster who is higher rated in this match!

And the Dreadnoughts end their USCL debut on a high note: Connecticut wins 3-1

The Two Teams with Newly Drafted GMs Duke it Out: The New Jersey Knockouts vs the New England Nor-Easters

GM Stripunsky- GM Ivanov 1-0 At the time this article is being written, Ivanov is pressing Stripunsky on the white side of a Caro Kann in Albany. Tomorrow, Stripunsky will have the white pieces. Stripunsky also typically does better than Ivanov in quicker time controls.... I give him the edge.

FM Bournival- IM Kapengut 1-0 Pure Instincts here!

FM Shen- FM Chase 1-0 Instincts again!

Goldberg- Wu 0-1 Wu, who recently came back from a few weeks of chess in Hungary, is more in shape than Ben... However whenever I predict Ben to lose, he wins, so we'll see what happens!

And New Jersey shall take the fame: NJ wins 3-1.

Last but not least, the Philadelphia Inventors take on the Baltimore Kingfishers

GM Erenburg- IM Enkhbhat 1-0 GM and white pieces- enough said.

IM Paikidze- SM Fisher 1-0 I never heard of Paikidze before this year's rosters went up, but with the “idze” at the end of her name, I knew she was another Georgian! Fisher was a beast for Philly last year, but that was on board 4; let's see how he'll make it on Board 2.

Gorman-Defibaugh 1/2-1/2 Defibaugh shocked the crowds this past July in the first round of the Washington International when he miniatured GM Azarov with the black pieces. If he plays like he did then, he's likely to win. Gorman is a pretty solid player though; something tells me this game will end up in peace.

FM Zimmer- IM Costigan 1/2-1/2 two pretty solid players which a bunch of draws in previous seasons.

And Philadelphia and Baltimore shall have the only draw of opening night: Drawn match 2-2

Stay tuned for Rabin's predictions for the Western Division's opening night, coming to a blog near you soon!

Gregg Allman on Colbert Report/ a Wee Bit of Cincinnati

Fireworks after a home run

Rabin is currently back in chess camp mode in the suburbs of Cleveland. Yes, I indeed will be headed to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next weekend, before my co-workers and I head to Pittsburgh. Last week, we were in Cincinnati and got a chance to see one of the three Reds-Indians games on Wednesday, June 13.
Frank's Franks at The Great American Ball Park

The same night  Gregg Allman was a guest on the Colbert Report, promoting his
new autobiography My Cross to Bear: Gregg Allman on Colbert Report

Click on the link to see the footage yourself but a few lines particularly struck me:

- Gregg Allman- "I don't mind being referred to as a legend. Its a hard one to live up to [though]."
- Stephen Colbert-" You were married to Cher, right?"... Gregg Allman- " No, she was married to me."

Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'm going to make any of the shows, given my travel schedule, but Gregg Allman will soon be jamming with the rest of the "brothers" in several awesome shows in August. They've got some individual shows, and some shows with Santana and some others with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
